Wood is the name the Chinese gave to the energy of Spring.
It is explosive, fast-moving and powerful, just like the growth of plants
and trees in the Springtime. Although slow, inner transformations take
place all winter inside the buds, roots, and seeds, in Spring this growth
becomes rapid and outward. New green shoots of grass bursting up through
the thawed earth, pliant yet strong enough to crack concrete, describe
the nature of Wood energy. Since we are a part of Nature, we also experience this energy of Wood. We are born by a powerful push from our mothers’ wombs, and thus, begin two decades of intense and rapid growth. During childhood, we express many of the qualities the Chinese ascribe to Wood—we are rooted and growing, flexible, creative, hopeful, explosive, dynamic, assertive, spontaneous, and experience a free flow of emotions. If we are healthy, we grow directly from the roots of our essence, and create our own identity by asserting ourselves in the world. To be in harmony with this energy of Wood in the Springtime, allow yourself to experience this birth and rapid growth. Activities for the season might include beginning new projects, planting seeds, creating something, or exercising, to express some of this explosive and dynamic energy.
